- An emu is a large bird. It looks similar to an ostrich but it only has 3 toes on each foot. An emu weighs from 35 to 40 kg. Emus can run very fast, but they can’t fly. An emu appears on the Australian 50 cent coin.
- The New Zealand two-dollar coin shows the kotuku- the white heron. The bird is rare in New Zealand it is important in Maori Mythology. The white heron eats small fish, frogs and insects.
- The Australian one-dollar coin shows 5 kangaroos. Kangaroos can be as small as a mouse or as big as two meters tall. They eat grass and green vegetation. People say that the word kangaroo comes from the word “gangurru” in an Australian Aboriginal language.
- The platypus is an unusual looking animal. It’s a mammal, but unlike mammals it lays eggs. It has a bill and feet like a duck but it is furry! It leaves in water and on the land. There is a picture of a platypus on the Australian 20 cent coin.
- Echidna eats ants and termites. They are similar to porcupines to look at but they have very tongues. The Echidna appears on the Australian 5 cent coin.
- Lyrebirds are native to Australia. They eat insects and snails. Male lyrebirds have beautiful tail feathers. They look a bit like pheasants. There is a lyrebird on the Australian 10 coin.
- Tuataras are reptiles similar to lizards. Scientists say they have not changed for 220 million years. They share their homes with seabirds and live for about 60 years. There is a picture of a tuatara on the New Zealand 5 cent coin.
